You'll get the best prices if you buy these things in June. Plus, here's what to wait until later in the year to buy.

June is a relatively quiet time for sales, between Memorial Day in May and Fourth of July sales and Prime Day in July. Still Father's Day falls in the middle of the month, and there are a few key seasonal buys that are smart to make.

Here's what to buy in June -- and what to wait until later in the year to buy.

What to buy in June 2019

Tools and hardware

Father's Day brings great deals from home improvement stores. So start looking in early June for sales on power tools and tool sets from retailers like Lowe's, Ace Hardware and Home Depot. In addition to tools, Father's Day sales at home improvement stores also often include deals on workbenches, garage storage and other handy essentials.

Restaurant gift cards

Major chain restaurants generally offer gift card deals en masse twice per year: During the holiday season and during the summer. The summer deals target graduation and Father's Day shoppers with free bonus cards with the purchase of gift cards. Whether you use the bonus card yourself or give it away, summer gift card specials are a good time to get extra value out of your gift card purchases. See this year's dad and grad restaurant gift card deals.

Spring clothing

Whenever the season changes, the previous season's clothing heads to the sales racks. That makes June a great time to find spring fashions on sale. Selection will shrink as summer progresses, however, so June is your last chance to scoop up light jackets and spring dresses. Check out large clothing retailers, such as Macy's, Target and Kohl's, for the biggest selection.

Top retailers to shop in June

In addition to the general shopping categories above, these specific retailers are worth checking out in June:

Bath and Body Works: The bath and home products retailer usually holds a semi-annual sale in early June. The 2019 dates haven't been announced yet, but stay tuned because the sale generally offers up to 75% off on some products. In the meantime, check out current deals.

Victoria's Secret: Victoria's Secret usually throws its summer semi-annual sale in early to mid June. Last year, it began on June 4. Discounts range up to 60% off, so if anything that Victoria's Secret sells is on your to-buy list, consider waiting for this sale.

West Elm: The End of Season sale (which runs through June) can help you snag West Elm's pricey furniture, decor, rugs and bedding for much less. Clearance items are up to 70% off.

World Market: The retailer is offering a slew of summer savings in June, including 10% off drink dispensers, 50% off outdoor items and 10% off select outdoor furniture.

Zara: The clothing retailer is known for its summer sale, which usually lands in mid-June (June 15 to 23 in 2018). Watch for this sale, because items generally get discounted by 30%.

What to wait to buy

Lawn mowers

You might find some deals during Father's Day sales. But mowers are a popular item all summer long, making discounts rare this time of year. Wait until the end of summer or early fall for your best shot at sales.

Summer clothing

With summer officially started, prices are at their highest on shorts, T-shirts and swimming suits. If you want these items for this summer, wait until Fourth of July sales. If you can wait a bit longer, however, shop the back-to-school sales at the end of summer. Temperatures will still be warm enough to wear summer clothes for a little while yet. And you'll find great prices on swim wear and summer fashions at retailers such as Kohl's, Old Navy, Macy's and Dillard's.

Pool gear

Floats, pool toys, kiddie pools and other swimming gear beckon from the shelves as school lets out for summer. But, if you can, wait until the kids go back to school to buy these items. Stores like Walmart, Big Lots, Target and even your local supermarket will want to offload these highly seasonal items quickly -- and offer upwards of 70% off.

Tech

With Amazon's Prime Day (and competing sales from other retailers) just around the corner in mid-July, hold off on your TV, computer or smart home purchase for now. Amazon will lower the prices on its proprietary Echo smart home devices, Kindle devices, Ring security devices and TVs. Competing retailers, such as Dell, Best Buy, eBay and more, will counter with their own tech deals.
